Are you in control of your anger or is it in control of you?

 Are you in control of your anger? by Rhonda Rabow All of us from time to time feel anger and frustration at life and at situations that face us. While feeling angry can be a normal reaction when feeling annoyed, stressed or attacked; it is how we deal with this emotion that allows us to know if we are managing our anger well or if it is the anger that has control over us. Take this quiz and see how you rate.

Anger quiz

  1. Do you tend to overreact and get angry about little things?
  2. Do you become aggressive when you are angry?
  3. Does your anger provoke tension between you and your family members, friends, colleagues, and/or co-workers?
  4. Did your doctor advise you to control your anger because it could be the cause of your current health issues?
  5. Do you remain angry or resentful about something that happened years ago.
  6. Do you need to retaliate with anger if you think someone has treated you unfairly?
  7. Do you always need to win?
  8. Do you find it difficult to express your anger in a calm manner?
  9. Do you apologize if your anger has hurt someone, or do you justify it?
  10. Do you often feel irritable and easily enraged?
  11. Have you ever broken things when feeling angry.
  12. Do you find it difficult to deal with people who don’t agree with your views?
  13. Do you come from a home environment where one or both parents expressed a lot of anger?
  14. Do you live by the expression, “It’s my way or the highway”?
  15. Do you see red and explode without being able to stop it?
If you have answered “yes” to 5 or more questions you may be one of the people who experience uncontrollable anger and may benefit from learning anger management techniques.

While some report they feel relief and more powerful after an explosion, it is also important to understand how this explosion damages relationships. Apologies after the fact, are never enough. Verbal abuse leaves scars, even if they are not visible. It diminishes the trust and love in a relationship. It not only creates resentment and distance from your partner but also instills fear and anxiety within your children. You need to ask yourself what is most important - to always win, even if it’s through fear and intimidation, or to work towards understanding another’s point of view which will lead to a healthy, loving relationship and will empower your children to feel safe and secure.
